O'Bama takes Coatesville by 75 percent, county by 11 percent
by Allen Davis Staff Writer Posted: Wednesday, 23 April 08; 1 p.m. Coatesville Democrats turned out in extraorindary record numbers yesterday to vote for presidential hopeful Barrack O'Bama as did Democrats throughout the county. In all of five of the Coatesville wards Democrat voter turn out was above 50 percent with O'Bama getting 75 percent of all those votes to defeat Hillary Clinton by 1,620 to 411 votes. O'Bama won Chester County by 40,411 votes to Clinton's 32,814, a margin of 11 percent, according to unofficial tallies from Chester County Voter Services. Clinton, however, did win Pennsylvania and all 158 delegate votes, keeping her run for the White House alive. Fifteen minutes before the polls opened at 8 a.m. lines had already formed outside the West End Firehouse in Coatesville's First Ward. Jim Pitcherella, the city's Democrat chairman, reported that by 10 a.m. the voter turnout in the Fourth Ward was already twice that of pervious elections. Ingrid Jones, a Democrat working the polls in the Second Ward, said voter turnout there was also heavy. Throughout the day in Coatesville O'Bama workers were visible on the streets, checking voter registration lists, and knocking on doors to get out the vote for O'Bama. "This is the third time I've been down this street," remarked one O'Bama worker in the Second Ward. You can e-mail Allen Davis at: allen@chestercountyreporter.com |
