Coatesville voters want changes
by Allen Davis Staff Writer Posted: Thursday, 8 Nov. 07; 11 a.m. Tuesday's election is unlikely to change the alignment of Coatesville's divided council where the so-called Block of Four continue to vote as a block. But, it may signify a significant turn among the electorate. Tuesday incumbent council members Ed Simpson and Marty Eggleston easily won election. Simpson, a Republican, had won the Democrat primary in his First Ward and Eggleston, a Democrat, likewise won the Republican primary in his Fifth Ward; consequently, neither had political opposition in Tuesday's general election. However, political newcomer Karen Jorgenson, a Democrat, soundly defeated her Republican opponent Harry Robinson Jr. by 95 to 30, better than a three-to-one ratio, in the Third Ward. Council Member Stephanie Dowridge-Smith had decided not to seek reelection. Robinson had the support of city Republican Party headed by Richard Legree who mostly recently made headlines regarding his participation in the selection of the police chief. "I think the election shows once again city voters are fed up with the way the city is being run," said Simpson. Jorgenson said she tends to agree. "People want more openness in government. They want to know what is happening with the budget. They want to know where the money is being spent. People need to be held accountable. Right now there is very little openness." Despite the controversy surrounding Coatesville, voter turnout in the city was far below that of the countywide 29 . In the First Ward only 12 percent of eligible voters turned out; in the Second Ward the turnout was 14 percent; in the Third Ward, 16 percent; the Fourth Ward, 1st precinct; 13 percent; Fourth Ward, 2nd precinct, 24 percent; and the Fifth Ward, 18 percent. There were no city races in the Second and Fourth wards. You can e-mail Allen Davis at: allen@chestercountyreporter.com |
