Eggleston critical of Walker; two council members walk out
by Allen Davis Staff Writer Posted: Friday, 16 Nov. 07; 1:15 p.m. Coatesville council was left without a quorum and unable to pass a resolution ending Tuesday night's council meeting because earlier two council members got up and walked of the meeting amid harsh criticism of City Manager Harry Walker by Council Member Marty Eggleston. Eggleston was reading through a list of concerns his constituents in the Fifth Ward had regarding how the city is being managed by Walker when Council Member Kareem Johnson remarked it was a "joke." "It isn't a joke," answered Eggleston. "They don't care enough to bring their own butts down here to ask a question," said Johnson. "That's what we're here for," said Eggleston. Johnson responded by getting up and leaving the council table. He was followed out of the council chambers by Council Member Kurt Schenk. Later, council President Patsy Ray apologized for their behavior. The walkout occurred at the end of the meeting reserved for council comments. Eggleston's harshest comments for Walker centered on a list of unfinished projects. "It's time you stopped talking and started doing something," he said. "There are so many unfinished projects . . . nothing is happening . . . you're always talking about what is going to happen." Eggleston then read through a list of concerns raised by those in his ward regarding public safety, the city budget, and even if race was being considered as a factor in filling the number of police vacancies. "I specifically request you answer these questions in written form so I can forward them to where they came from," said Eggleston. Eggleston recommended to Walker that he needs to take a stronger stance. "If some mandates have to be hand down to your department heads, it needs to happen. I'm asking you to do something about this today," he said. Council was unable to adjourn the meeting because they were left without of a quorum. Under advice of city Solicitor Andrew Lehr, Ray noted for the record council lacked a quorum. "I guess we just get up and leave," she said. And they did.
