The Coatesville school district is looking to save as much as $2.5 million by firing its project manager, Turner Construction, and doing the job in-house with two if its employees.

Last night the operations committee unanimously voted to recommend to the full board that Facilities Director Frank D'Angelo and Bill Androwiak, of the buildings and grounds department, take over the job of as project managers for the district's renovation and building program. Lupold told the operations committee that Turner had been dimissed "about five days ago."

But the decision to dismiss Turner Construction wasn't all financial. "They were not doing what was expected of them," said Board Member Paul Johnson, who serves on the operation's committee. "They promised us top notch people and they didn't deliver."

The district is already into its 10-year, $300 million renovation and construction program. One of the first schools to be updated was the 9/10 Center that had a history of foundation sinkings and faulty ventilation systems. Bids for the construction of a new Rainbow Elementary School are expected to be awarded next month.

Ken Lupold, the district's business manager, said had Turner Construction stayed on throughout the project it would have earned more than $3 million; it has already been paid more than a $1 million.

Lupold said the district will hire a third person to assist D'Angelo and Androwiak to cover weekends and a night shift.
